Medical Advisor to the Genetic Counsellor Registration Board (GCRB)

The purpose of the GCRB is to establish, maintain and improve standards of practice in genetic counselling to assure public safety in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

It seeks to achieve this through accepting responsibility in three primary areas:

• Setting and monitoring standards for entry to the profession
• Establishing and maintaining open and transparent systems of professional accreditation
• Maintaining and improving standards of professional practice, to protect and promote the professional reputation for the benefit of the profession and public alike

The vision of the GCRB is “ensuring expertise to serve families with genetic conditions”.

Remit:

We are seeking a clinical geneticist to act in the role of Medical Advisor to the GCRB to:

• Provide expert medical advice to the GCRB in relation to its policies and procedures
• Advise in relation to training and competencies to ensure standards are maintained to protect and promote the professional reputation, for the benefit of the profession and public alike
• Support the GCRB to maintain open and transparent communications with other professional and regulatory bodies
• Contribute to strategic developments in the GCRB aligned to National Genomics strategies

Attendance:

The Board holds a two-day meeting twice a year. The Medical Advisor would be invited to attend either virtually or face to face at these meetings. The Chair of the GCRB would invite their input for specific aspects of these meetings so full attendance at a two-day meeting would not be required.

This is a voluntary role and terms of reference are available on request.

The GCRB Scope of Practice outlines relevant professional skills, knowledge and the maintenance of updated, evidence based care that prioritises the safety of our patients and their families.

The GCRB has updated the Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct contains the personal and professional standards that GCRB Registered Genetic Counsellors must uphold.
